Billy Dean Benkendorfer passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at a local care facility. He was born December 22, 1928, in West, Texas to Otto Henry and Laura Mae Thomas Benkendorfer.

Billy was a self-employed painter by trade, painting many of the historical homes in Temple and taking great pride in his 53 years of service which included such notable clients as the founding Scott and White doctors. He loved history and sharing his knowledge of guns, coins, and the Civil War. He also enjoyed cooking and would delight in making banana split pies or fruit cakes for neighbors and friends.

Although many never knew his name, he was the unofficial greeter at Belton Shipley’s Do-Nuts for many years. He would be there every morning with a smile and friendly word. He loved the employees and they took very special care of “Mr. Bill”. He never met a stranger and was beloved by many. His positivity was reflected in his familiar phrase “you betcha!” and he always closed with a sincere “thank you”.

Billy is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his sister, Beatrice Jean Ellis. He is survived by a niece, Marsha Lewis, and nephews, Jimmy Ellis and Danny Ellis, as well as great nieces and nephews. In addition, he will be fondly remembered by his many devoted friends and caregivers at Shipley’s, Landmark Apartments, Meals on Wheels, True Heart Hospice, and Avir Care Facility. A special thank you to his hospice nurse Scotty and longtime caregiver, Lillian.

Visitation will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a service to celebrate Mr. Bill’s life at 2:00 p.m. at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Belton. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery.
