Bonnie Cooke passed away on June 11, 2013 in Temple, Texas, at the heroic age of 100. But heroic only begins to describe the life of this remarkable woman.
Bonnie was born August 26, 1912 in Schwertner, Texas, the daughter of Oscar and Melba White, the middle child in a household of eight children. She graduated from Bartlett High School in 1929, and in 1934 married the love of her life, Charles Cookie Cooke, also from Schwertner. Cookie was a Navy man, and served his country admirably during WWII. In 1942, Cookie and hundreds of other brave men perished when the USS Juneau sank at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Bonnie responded by enlisting in the WAVES and served the Navy and her country until 1946, achieving the rank of pharmacist mate first class.
Bonnie spent her subsequent years working for the Stetson Company in Dallas and endearing herself to her many friends and relatives. In 2012, upon her 100th birthday, she was honored with a memorable party in Temple, where her service and sacrifice was celebrated by those friends and relatives and representatives of the armed services, who treated her with remarkable grace. She referred to herself as Mrs. Charles Cooke until the day she passed away.
She is survived by loving family and many others who appreciated her energy and colorful personality.
Bonnie will be laid to rest at the Bartlett City Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 15, 2013. Bonnie will reside eternally with her beloved Cookie.
