Golda Loree Smith Roberts, 74, of Temple, was promoted to heaven on Sunday night, October 16, 2016. Her passing from this life was unexpected and shocked all that knew her. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 3pm at First Baptist Church in Belton.
Golda began life in 1942, born the fifth child of seven on the farm in Arnett, Texas -just outside of Gatesville in Coryell County. She attended grade school in a one room school house in Arnett. She went on to graduate Gatesville High School as a proud "Hornet" in 1960 where she lettered in Basketball and was a member of the Future Nurses program. She met Jerry Roberts through mutual friends and they married in November 1960. They started a family in 1961 with Cindy's birth, and then came Lee in 1967 and Joe Dan in 1970. Golda held secretarial positions at Mrs. Baird's Bread in Waco, Standard Desk in Temple, and many years as office manager of Active Moving and Storage in Killeen. She was in her 40's when she began college classes at Central Texas College then to their nursing program. She graduated nursing school in 1990, passed her state board exam as a Registered Nurse, and began her new career at Olin E. Teague Veterans Hospital in Temple. Enjoying her new role she became very accomplished, earning several specialized certifications and flourished in her new "calling".
She enjoyed many hobbies including cooking and baking meals and desserts that had others bugging for the recipes. Sewing was another talent and she made clothes for many; she loved to garden, an avid bird watcher and loved to travel. Golda's travel included Canada, Costa Rica, and Peru. Her most recent journey was her trip to New York City, Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. however she started feeling ill by mid-week. She was a member of several social clubs including Bell County Newcomer's Club, The Golden Age Club of First Baptist Church - Belton, Twin Lakes Audubon Society, two Red Hat Ladies groups, and played Canasta and Bunko regularly. She also has a four legged furry kid: Buddy, who seems a bit confused by her absence.
Ever busy and as active as she could be she always made time for others, rarely met a stranger, was honest to a fault, and loved life, bumps and all. She will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to have known her. We know where she is RIGHT NOW - with God our Father and all the hosts of heaven.
Golda was preceded in death by her parents William Otis Smith and Loree Elva Bell Smith, her husband Jerry Earl Roberts and two of her siblings: Norma Rose and Clarence Smith.
Golda is survived by siblings: Choice, Naomi, Bill, and Lloyd; her three children: Cindy, Lee, and Joe Dan; six grandchildren: Jared, Eric, Caitlyn, Jacob, Josh, and Kristin; and great granddaughter: Toff; and her dear friend and companion: Don Sutton.
