Our father, James "Jim" Edley Burns, passed from this earthly life Friday, August 12, 2016 to be with his parents, siblings and other members of his family in heaven. He was surrounded by family and friends with hands of love to the end. James was born August 29, 1923, in Abbott, Texas, to Edley Osburn Burns of Williamsboro, Tennessee and Elizabeth Werssen of Smoland, Sweden. Mr. Burns was a member of First Baptist Church in Belton.
James served in World War II as a Mortar Machinist's Mate 3rd Class aboard the USS Stern which served in the Pacific arena. He was a graduate of the 1944 class of Aquilla High School. He was a winning coach for many years in the Belton Youth Baseball league, coaching the teams of the Minimax Giants, Riverside and the Belton Jaycees. Mr. Burns was a past adult sponsor of the Tigertown 4-H and assisted with the Bell County Livestock Show for many years. He also was a past volunteer in the Belton Band Boosters as well as a past member of the Belton Athletic Association.
He was preceded in death by the late Juanita James Burns. He is survived by four children: Richard James Burns (Lisa Cording Burns) of Huntsville, Texas, Deborah Lynne Cannon (Michael Cannon) of Lakeworth, Florida, Robert Glenn Burns of Belton and Ronald Wayne Burns of Sealey, Texas. He has five grandchildren: Patrick James Burns of Levittown, Pennsylvania, Cody Bryan Melton and Cooper Ray Melton of Lakeworth, Florida, Richard Cording Burns and Colby Watson Burns of Huntsville, Texas.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 19th, from 6-8 pm, at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Belton, followed by a graveside burial service Saturday, August 20th, 10 am, at the North Belton Cemetery with Dr. Leroy Kemp officiating.
