Funeral services for Mary Ann Summers, 82, of Belton will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at First Baptist Church Little River. Burial will follow at Wilson Valley Cemetery. Bro. Kenneth Reeder will be officiating.
Mrs. Summers passed away Saturday at a local care center.
She was born March 12, 1933 in Newport, Arkansas to the late Finis and Jimmie (Nicholson) Hohn. She graduated from Grubbs High School in 1951, where she lettered in basketball, because she was "always the tallest girl in school."
Mary Ann married Cledus Owen Summers, her best friend since childhood, on April 24, 1954 in Grubbs, Arkansas. Together they raised their four children, Terry, Doug, Sissy, and Kathy. They settled in Little River in 1967.
She retired from Scott & White Hospital after many years as a desk aide in the plastic surgery department. Mary Ann was a passionate bingo player and NCIS devotee. She loved to travel- whether a quick trip to Shreveport, a high school reunion with friends in Grubbs, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and even to the pyramids of Egypt and the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. But her very favorite trips were to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their adventures.
She was a life-long Baptist who loved to sing "Amazing Grace". Cledus and Mary Ann and their children attended Sixth Avenue Baptist Church for many years, establishing friendships that span decades.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Kathryn Gill of Petersburg VA, brother Bill Hohn of Grubbs AR, and her beloved husband SFC Cledus Owen Summers of Little River. Survivors include 2 sons, Terry Owen Summers and wife Sylvia of West Warwick, RI, and Douglas Neal Summers of Nashville, TN; 2 daughters, Laurel Ann "Sissy" Grillo and husband Andy and Kathryn Eugenia Williams and husband Nathan all of Belton; a brother, Jack Hohn of Newport, AR and sister-in-law Alice Hohn of Jonesboro, AR; 9 grandchildren Todd King, Kristy Watson, Sarah Iannuccilli, Danielle Williams, Ethan Williams, Joslynn Summers, Stephanie Summers, April Summers, and Douglas Neal Summers, Jr., and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by so many life-long friends, whose love she cherished.
The family will receive visitors from 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, May 18, 2015 at the HarperTalasek Funeral Chapel in Belton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or Operation Heal Our Patriots, Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
