Ovid Dolan Wear, aged 85 years, died July 23, 2017 in the home of his birth near the village of Salado. Services will be July 27 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Belton at 12:00 and burial will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen at 2:00.
Mr. Wear was born to Thomas Calvin and Violet Irene Wear on August 5, 1931. His grandparents, of Scottish ancestry, brought the family to Texas in 1846 to what was then Comanche Territory.
Ovid Wear was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings: Gladys Irene Smith, Thomas Calvin Wear Junior, Ruby Ione Buchannan, Othal Vernon Wear, and two infant brothers.
Mr. Wear retired as Master Sergeant from the Air Force in 1970 after proudly serving for 22 years and having been stationed at 21 duty stations, including several states as well as French Morocco, England, Libya, and Thailand. He later served for 19 years as a Civil Servant at Fort Hood.
Ovid Wear was a gifted athlete and is featured in a display at his alma mater, Salado High School. He played baseball, football, basketball and throughout life water skied, bowled, played a mean game of badminton, and happily challenged his family at the annual ‘pasture croquet' game played after Thanksgiving dinner.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, shooting a trophy deer two years ago. He could track a wild honeybee back to its nest and bring home a bucket of honey. He and Faye were happy campers with the Good Sam club until driving became difficult for him a few years ago.
Ovid Wear was a life-long Christian and followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a deacon to the Cedar Knob Southern Baptist Church built on land donated by his family. He later served for over 20 years as deacon to the Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton. He was a very active member of Gideons International until his health prevented him from handing out Bibles on college campuses.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years - Annie Faye Petty Wear, of Belton, who cared for him at their home until he passed away. His children are Dianna and husband Daniel Hodges of Lampasas, David Dolan Wear of Austin, and Donna and husband Bernie Koepsel of Buda. Grandchildren are Annah and husband Eloy Lopez, Karen and husband Andrew Limmer, Arica Anderson and partner Brent Golden. Ovid and Faye were also very proud of 4 great-grandchildren: Isabella and Olivia Lopez, and Henry and William Limmer.
In lieu of flowers it is Ovid Wear's request that donations be given to Gideon International and earmarked for the purchase of Bibles.
The family is grateful for Hospice, Home Health, Brother Albert Lopez, doctors, loving friends, and neighbors who helped care for him in his final months.
The family will receive visitors and friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the funeral home.
