Sammie Koon, 76, of Temple went to be with her Lord on July 19, 2013 after a short illness. Services will be 10:00 am Monday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton. Visitation with the family will be 1 hour prior to the service. A private burial will follow at a later time.
Mrs. Koon was born January 29, 1937, to Sam and Ruby Martin in Llano County. She attended schools in Temple and was proud that she later earned a GED in May 1988. In December 1972, she married Dale Koon. She grew up and lived in Temple, raised her children in Pope, Mississippi, and spent many years of her retirement in Victoria.
Mr. and Mrs. Koon were members of the VFW Post 1820 and were passionate about veteran issues. Between 1972 and 1990, Mrs. Koon held many offices in the Ladies Auxiliary, most notably president and District 14 president. She was most proud of the many times she spoke to schools about the American flag, for the many buddy poppies she sold, and for the many meals she hosted. She retired from Temple Independent School District as a Cafeteria Manager in 1995. She was a lifelong Baptist.
Sammie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dale Koon, and parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Beard of Temple son, Grady Beard of Pope, MS brother, Jimmy Martin and sisterinlaw Beverly Martin of Goliad sister, Rosa Christenson of Port OConnor sisterinlaw Sandra Martindale of Pope, MS grandchildren, Summer Leibensperger of Morgans Point Resort, Stony Leibensperger of Pope, MS, Adam Beard of Batesville, MS, and Jennifer Warren of Tupelo, MS and 2 greatgrandchildren.
